The first BMW 6 Series grand coupe was produced from 1976 to 1989 (code name E24).

After a 16-year break, the 6-Series came back in 2004 (as code name E63) 6 Series.

There has been an M6 model of both generations.

The BMW 8-Series is sometimes regarded as the spiritual successor to the E24 6-Series, however it had a higher price point and performance than the preceding 6-Series.
